Both the Escape and the CR-V are available in a variety of trim levels. The Ford comes in S, SE, SEL, Titanium, and Titanium hybrid grades. Four versions of the Honda are available: LX, EX, EX-L, and touring.

It's also worth noting that the Ford Escape is completely redesigned for 2020. The Honda CR-V, on the other hand, sees a few updates, such as revised exterior styling and a more powerful standard engine.

Design

Sleek body lines and eye-catching wheel options come standard on both the Escape and CR-V. Though arguably, the Ford looks a bit more modern due to its recent redesign. The Ford also turns things up a notch with standard LED taillamps and fuel-saving active grille shutters.

Inside, both SUVs offer room for up to five passengers. The Ford boasts interior features, such as an available 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a hands-free, foot-activated tailgate. A long list of creature comforts -- including heated seats and a heated steering wheel -- are also offered. The maximum cargo volume behind the second-row is 974L. Passenger volume comes in at 2,945 L.

Key features inside the Honda include available heated seats and standard dual-zone climate. Passenger volume is between 2877L and 2999L, depending on which trim level you choose. Cargo volume behind the second-row is between 1065L and 1110L.

Performance

When it comes to performance the Escape has the CR-V beat. The Ford offers three engine choices. S, SE, and SEL trim levels come with an EcoBoost 1.5L turbocharged three-cylinder (181 hp, 190 lb.-ft.).

Upgrading to the Titanium gets you a powerful EcoBoost 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder (250 hp, 280 lb.-ft.). Also, an ultra-efficient hybrid powertrain is available on the Titanium. Both EcoBoost engines pair to an 8-speed automatic transmission, while the hybrid powertrain uses a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Front-wheel-drive comes standard and all-wheel-drive is available.

By comparison, all versions of the Honda come with a turbocharged 1.5L four-cylinder engine (190 hp, 179 lb.-ft.) paired with a (CVT). Front-wheel-drive comes standard and all-wheel-drive is available.

Key standard features

The Escape comes with an impressive list of standard features. Most importantly, all models come with the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite of driver assistant systems. The bundle includes features, such as a Blind Spot Information System, Lane Keeping Assist and Pre-Collision Assist. Onboard Wi-Fi and the SYNC infotainment system also come standard on the Ford.

As for the CR-V, it comes standard with the Honda Sensing suite of driver assistance systems and a prominent touchscreen multimedia center.
