The plug-in version of the new Ford Escape has a fuel economy rating of about 5.8 L/100 km. That's not only because of the 60-kilometre electric range but also because of the distances covered by the 2.5-litre 4-cylinder gas engine.
The RAV4 Prime leads in range with 68 kilometres. On the other hand, its fuel consumption rating is 6.2 L/100 km in combined mode, almost 8% higher than the Ford Escape.
The Escape PHEV offers an electric range thanks to its 14.4-kilowatt-hour battery with seating for five in two rows. Its 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and 88-kilowatt electric motor produce a combined 221 horsepower and require a 3.3-hour charge at a home station.
Its slightly more powerful rival requires just over 4.5 hours of battery charging.
The Escape PHEV is available in three trim levels: SE, SEL and Titanium. The good news is that all three trims are eligible for a federal tax credit of up to $2,500. This financial assistance brings its base price closer to that of its gasoline counterpart.
The good news is that the Escape PHEV's range, like that of the RAV4 Prime, allows for short-distance trips on electricity alone. Still, the safety net provided by the gasoline engine mitigates the range anxiety associated with all-electric vehicles.
The advantage of the Ford Escape PHEV doesn't end there. It adds the class-leading SYNC system and the CoPilot360 safety package, which is packed with driving aids.
The Ford Escape's 869 litres of interior space also accommodates the luggage of the five passengers it carries.
The Toyota RAV4 Prime is an excellent choice. But for peace of mind and a modern, fuel-efficient SUV, the Ford Escape PHEV is a perfect choice. Come see it at Lincoln Heights Ford.
