In its first year, over 400,000 units were sold. Since then, the Ford Mustang has become the best-selling sports car globally. Enthusiasts can't wait to get their cars out and hit the back roads when the spring weather permits.
The rest of us are just jealous. But you know that there are many different types of Mustangs, from the 310 horsepower Ecoboost 4-cylinder engine to the 760 horsepower Shelby GT500's supercharged engine. If you're more of a driving enthusiast, you can opt for one of the convertible models, which allows you to drive with your hair down and enjoy the car's sporty character.
But the Mustang is more than a car, it's a legend. So here are five facts about the Ford Mustang that you'll want to discover for yourself this summer!
The name Mustang comes from an airplane
While the car's logo is a horse, it was actually a warplane that served as the inspiration for the name. According to designer John Najjar, he came up with the name and associated it with the World War II P-51 fighter plane. The name was rejected at first. Then it was associated with American horses, and the idea caught on!
The first 700 horsepower Mustang
The Shelby GT500 is the first Mustang to offer over 700 horsepower. A total of 760 horsepower is produced under the hood, controlled by a seven-speed Tremec dual-clutch automatic transmission. Purists may complain about it, but we love it.
It's not that expensive
In some of its iterations, the Ford Mustang can give many supercars a run for their money when it comes to performance, but that doesn't necessarily mean the muscle car is that expensive. On the contrary, the Mustang is available in a wide variety of versions and prices for the base coupe model start at just over $32,000. Even the convertibles are affordable.
It can be tailored to your taste
The Mustang is available in many versions, as we know. But it can also add performance packages or give you a slight nod to the past with the Mach 1 that has been on the market for a few months. So it's possible to equip your Mustang to look like you while delivering dazzling performance.
It holds its own
The evil tongues will say that muscle cars are better in a straight line but offer little handling. They've never driven a Mustang. The new versions have optional MagneRide suspensions and steering so precise that they are easier to drive than most sedans.
