If both start from the same idea, that of providing a small truck with reduced dimensions and an affordable price, the interpretation is, however, different. While the Ford Maverick offers a more affordable version, the Hyundai Santa Cruz has a much higher starting price.
Different capabilities
At Ford, we opted for a basic version that focuses on simplicity and economy. With a base price of well under $30,000, the Ford Maverick rolls out with front-wheel drive and a 191-horsepower hybrid engine. It's the fuel economy rating that's spectacular, at about 6.3 L/100 km.
A more powerful version, also adding all-wheel drive, is also on the Maverick's list. Under the hood, it has a 2.0-litre, 250-horsepower, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine capable of propelling the little truck from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in just 7 seconds.
The Hyundai Santa Cruz, on the other hand, has only one engine, a 2.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder, and only all-wheel drive is available.
Interior
Premium interiors are a hallmark of the Hyundai group. And - with the exception of a truck-like PRND shifter - the Santa Cruz has essentially the same interior found in the Tucson. So it's a VUS with a box added.
Ford does a great job of adding clever features and textures to make its interior cool and exciting. For example, you can store your giant water bottle in the door. Some of the colours and appliqués confirm the Maverick's unique cockpit style.
Capacity
Both trucks obviously rely on a box to distinguish themselves from SUVs. On the Ford side, the 4-foot box has a Flex system, a trick that allows, with certain accessories or simply pieces of wood, to arrange the box to make it even more versatile. This allows it to handle up to 1519 pounds of cargo.
The Hyundai Santa Cruz, which comes standard with a box cover, can carry up to 1400 pounds in its slightly longer box than Ford's. Where the Santa Cruz wins is on towing capacity as with the optional package, it can offer up to 5,000 pounds. The base Ford Maverick can tow 2,000 pounds or 4,000 pounds on the more equipped versions.
Conclusion
Stylish and refined, both small trucks have their pros and cons. While Hyundai is entering the pickup market with the Santa Cruz, Ford is building on its known expertise to offer something well put together. It's up to you to try it out.
