That's no small statement, but it's the one made by 63 female journalists from 45 countries around the world, including two from Canada. The title was awarded to the Ford Ranger as part of the "Women's cars and trucks of the year awards," a competition that annually crowns the world's best vehicles.
The next generation Ford Ranger, that will be available here at the end of the year, was chosen after a lengthy selection process. Each member of the judging panel tested the eligible vehicles in each category.
There were many reasons why the Ford Ranger won. Among them, the jury members particularly appreciated the truck's adventurous qualities. In particular, the 4 x 4 wheel drive was appreciated for its versatility and speed of action.
The Tremor package, and the upcoming arrival of a Raptor version with more powerful shocks and increased ground clearance, also helped the jury choose the Ford Ranger.
But beyond its off-road capabilities, automotive journalists chose the Ranger as the winner because of its ride comfort, and the many accessories available.
The Ford Ranger's more nuanced styling, as well as its powerful 310-horsepower yet fuel-efficient 2.3-litre EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine, also helped the small truck win points.
In fact, the judges noted, "This is a reliable, stylish and charismatic pickup. It moves with ease over any terrain. It's as efficient as an off-roader but more practical because of its cargo capacity."
It should be noted that the version being evaluated for the Women's World Car of the Year is a new 2023 version (available here next year), featuring, among other things, the Sync4 system in a 10.1-inch touchscreen, which is new this year. The rear damping system has also been reworked, making the ride more comfortable, and attracting high marks from the judges.
One last detail: just because the judges are all female doesn't mean the Ranger is a "woman's" car. The selections are not "women's cars" because such categories do not exist. The purpose of the awards is to highlight the role of women in the automotive world and also to select the best cars of the year. As far as voting is concerned, the criteria are based on the same principles that guide any driver when choosing a car. Aspects such as safety, quality, price, design, ease of driving, benefits and environmental footprint, among others, are taken into account when voting.
