It was on the sidelines of the New York International Auto Show that Ford CEO Jim Farley announced the imminent arrival of a hybrid version of the Bronco.

Ford has recently revised its electrification plans. The brand is now aiming for a less radical approach than a direct transition from gasoline to fully electric vehicles, instead focusing on everything in between.

A Hybrid Future

In the medium term, Ford’s goal is to offer at least one hybrid version for every model in its lineup. As a result, the Bronco won’t be the only one to receive this treatment, as the entire range will benefit from it.

The American automaker also plans to introduce new plug-in hybrid models as well as electric vehicles with range extenders. This type of powertrain uses a gasoline engine solely to recharge the battery, a solution that is particularly well-suited for electric vehicles expected to handle towing duties. We already know that this new powertrain will be featured in the next generation of the F-150 Lightning.

A Fourth Option

Currently, the Ford Bronco offers three powertrain options. The SUV is first equipped with a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. With this engine, buyers can choose between a 7-speed manual transmission or a 10-speed automatic.

It also offers a 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 delivering 330 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, the Raptor version is powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 producing 418 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. The 10-speed automatic transmission is the only option available with both V6 engines.

Needless to say, we are eager to find out what the hybrid version’s powertrain will consist of. The Ford Bronco is a vehicle I’m very fond of, but it is quite fuel-hungry. The hybrid version is likely to attract an even broader audience to a model that continues to grow in popularity.
